Chiefs run riot over Blues 63-34
Sitiveni Sivivatu inspired the Chiefs to a stunning 63-34 Super 14 victory over the Blues in Hamilton.
The All Blacks wing scored a record-equalling four tries, three of them within the opening 26 minutes, as the Chiefs stunned their New Zealand rivals.
Sivivatu's rapid-fire contribution helped ease the Chiefs out to a 35-8 lead after just 32 minutes.
The Chiefs ran in nine tries in total but conceded five against a Blues team who can expect to become closely acquainted with the tackling bags at training next week.
Sivivatu began the pyrotechnics in just the second minute following a surging run from No 8 Sione Lauaki almost immediately from the kickoff.
The Chiefs retained the ball, stayed patient and found instant reward as Sivivatu showed clinical finishing touches to score a franchise record 33rd try for the team.
He was in again after six minutes, before completing his hat-trick with a low slide to the line along the left-hand touchline.
Shortly before this, centre Richard Kahui showed he, too, can deliver a freakish finish when he kicked the ball ahead inside the 22, fell, regained both his balance and the ball before finding the tryline.
But there was more to come as halfback Brendon Leonard left a vocal crowd hoarse with delight, scampering 70m for an opportunistic try after snapping up a loose ball at a ruck.
Isaia Toeava and Joe Rokokcoko responded for the Blues before the break, but the Chiefs went into their half-time huddle leading 35-15.
Sivivatu was much quieter after the interval but the Chiefs continued to dominate with Lelia Masaga, Liam Messam and Callum Bruce all crossing for tries as the Blues simply disintegrated.
The Blues' defensive deficiencies aside, they asked plenty of questions of the Chiefs with the ball in hand, but were very much the junior partner in a match which almost posted a century of points.
That man Sivivatu reappeared near the end to dot down a fourth time to complete the rout.
