Freo coach ponders over new recruits
With Fremantle embarking on their toughest pre-season ever, coach Mark Harvey is pondering how to integrate up to 14 new players that will arrive in the next fortnight via the upcoming AFL drafts.
Harvey said he was concerned that players drafted to the club would start behind the eight-ball during the most important time of their development.
Fremantle have picks 3, 21, 24, 37, 53, 56, 68 and 77 in Saturday's national draft but the Dockers may pass on their last pick in order to participate in the pre-season draft.
"The influx of seven or eight players next week and then in two weeks' time another six players, that's a concern actually I think for the AFL," Harvey said.
"The fact that these guys (on our list) are already four or five weeks down the track in their pre-season and then all of a sudden first year or second year players are just about to be drafted ... they're behind in many ways.
"I understand why we have it (the draft) at this time ... the kids' schooling is important and they need to finish that.
"But they are just behind in their first year in a pretty important start to their career."
Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich said he was over the knee soreness that plagued him last season and would hit the pre-season full on.
"I'm considered an old bull these days so a few of us are getting looked after to a certain extent," Pavlich said.
"I was behind these guys this morning in the runs out on the track.
"The young whippets out the front are going hard so it's good to watch them and it's inspiring to see how well they're training, but for me I'm just tracking along nicely."
Former Brisbane midfielder Matthew Moody has been training with the club in the order to revive his AFL career.
Meanwhile, Fremantle have secured a new major sponsor, with Integrated Group signing on for the next three seasons.
Integrated, a national recruitment specialist, will share the major sponsorship with LG Electronics.
