Prizemoney incentive for World Cup teams
This year's Rugby League World Cup will offer $2 million in prizemoney for the 10 competing nations, organisers said.
The winning team in the October 25 to November 22 tournament will receive $650,000, with $525,000 to the runners-up.
The remainder of the money will be distributed on a sliding scale to other teams, according to where they finish in the competition.
Tournament Director Colin Love said the money would provide a significant incentive for competing teams.
"This is a tournament that is a stepping stone to new opportunities for the international game," Love said.
"The tournament has already provided much needed infrastructure and opportunities for those nations who have earned the right to be represented at the opening ceremony on October 26."
Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are competing in this year's World Cup.
