Wallabies wait on Elsom appeal hearing

The Wallabies will wait on the result of an appeal against Rocky Elsom's suspension being heard before naming their team to take on South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Elsom was rubbed out of the match after being found guilty of pulling down Springboks captain Victor Matfield in last Saturday's win.

His hearing is scheduled to take place at 12pm local time (2000 AEST) and will involve a telephone hook-up with three SANZAR officials.

The big flanker will train with the Australian side on Thursday morning before hearing his fate.

Apart from Elsom's predicament, Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will need to consider replacements for injured centre Berrick Barnes and lock Dan Vickerman, both of whom returned home with shoulder injuries this week.

Forward Hugh McMeniman is recovering well from a stomach bug that laid him low for three days and caused him to miss last Saturday's 27-15 win in Durban.

Meanwhile, Wallabies set-piece coach Michael Foley says Australia's targeting of the strong Springboks' lineout last Saturday was not necessarily a surprise tactic.

"Maybe they were surprised, I don't know," Foley said.

"For us it's about trying to create pressure around that lineout and the two key guys are the thrower and the caller, so if you can create pressure for them to operate under it's going to be more difficult.

"Their decision-making becomes a lot less accurate and that doesn't necessarily just apply to South Africa, that's at any time.

"I just thought through the level of accuracy the guys were able to put into it, they were able to create a pressure situation where guys who are very, very good made errors and that's what you're aiming for every week."

The Wallabies won all of their lineout ball and stole five Springboks throws at ABSA Stadium.

"The guys did a particularly good job, probably one of our better performances against South Africa in the last couple of years, there's no doubt," Foley said.

"(Lock) Matfield takes a lot of pride in the lineout and he's their captain now and that probably says it all."
