Farr-Jones to offer Burgess passing tips
Nick Farr-Jones hopes to help Wallaby halfback Luke Burgess iron out the chinks in his passing game before Saturday's big clash with the All Blacks.
Farr-Jones has tipped Burgess to become one of Australia's best halfbacks and praised his "refreshing" honesty in assessing his own shortcomings in the weekend's 16-9 win over South Africa.
The former World Cup winning captain and halfback also and urged Wallabies selectors to keep faith with the newcomer.
Burgess was first to admit his ball clearance needed to improve after throwing too many inaccurate passes against the Boks.
Farr-Jones believed he could help and hoped they could work together before this week's Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations Test at ANZ Stadium.
"There's a lot of people in the past that could be quite defensive with their performance," Farr-Jones said.
"Burgess, I've read, and we've swapped a few texts and spoken a couple of times ... he certainly realises he can go a lot better and that's a very positive thing.
"But he's doing good things. He's got the makings of a terrific halfback and hopefully I get a chance to help him minimise some of those errors.
"We might get together tomorrow afternoon and I'd like to sit down and have a good look at his technique. When you're sitting in a stand, you don't really get a chance to do that.
"I know that they break things down on the computer now and I'd like to have a really good look and then maybe go out for 45 minutes and look at the pass and look at the technique.
"But, look, I think he's doing all the things right. He's getting in there, he's got his nose on the ball, which is desperately important, he's prepared to have a go, he's making oppositions close-in think.
"I'd like to have a good chat to him as well about judgement and decision making and hopefully we'll get that opportunity."
Farr-Jones said Burgess was well worth persevering with.
"I'd like to see him be given every chance this year to prove himself and I think we've got to be patient," he said.
"Yeah, he's made a couple of errors. Some of those errors have been partly because of not great cleaning out at the ruck at the breakdown.
"But the positive thing is that he doesn't shirk. He (acknowledges) that he can do better and he's prepared to put his hand up.
"I think he'll turn into one of our fine scrum halves."
