Give ACT more Test caps: Nucifora
The Brumbies should be rewarded with more Wallaby caps after their fourth successive Super 12 semi-final appearance, coach David Nucifora has urged.
Nucifora said players like wing discovery Mark Gerrard, hard-running centre Joel Wilson and versatile back Mark Bartholomeusz deserved consideration along with their many capped teammates when the 24-man Wallaby squad is chosen this week.
Missing four key members of their backline - Stephen Larkham, Matt Giteau, Stirling Mortlock and Andrew Walker - the Brumbies put up a brave performance in Saturday night's Super 12 playoff at Eden Park before falling to the Blues 42-21.
They were unable to peg back a 22-0 halftime lead, despite a rousing second half against a potent Blues side that has only lost once all season and is unbeaten at home.
Brilliant attack will confront stifling defence when the fleet-footed Blues host the defending champion Crusaders in an all-New Zealand final next Saturday, after the Christchurch-based side eliminated the Hurricanes 39-16 on Friday night.
Despite the loss Nucifora said it was a positive end to the season and underlined the Brumbies status as Australia's best provincial side.
The Waratahs blew their chance to make the semi-final by not scoring enough tries for a bonus point in their final round-robin game and finished fifth, while Queensland had its worst Super 12 year since 1997 when it placed 10th.
"There's been a lot of positives come out of the year for us and to finish on an effort like that, I think was terrific," Nucifora said.
"Everything was stacked against us and we were playing what has been the best team in the competition week in, week out in their home ground and for us to put three very good tries on them was a very good effort."
The Brumbies have blooded five Super 12 players this season, with the injured Giteau the standout.
