Mortlock urges Wallabies to raise game
Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock has rallied his troops and demanded nothing less than a convincing victory in their year-ending Test against Scotland at Murrayfield.
The Wallabies are desperate to atone for last week's 21-6 drubbing at the hands of Ireland and finish 2006 with more wins than losses.
Defeat in Edinburgh on Saturday (local time) would leave Australia with six wins, six losses and a draw under first-year coach John Connolly, and Mortlock admits the Wallabies are feeling the heat.
"Every Test match there's pressure there," Mortlock said.
"That's the reality of the beast that we face nowadays and we've got high standards upon ourselves, let alone from the public and whatnot placed on us.
"So we know that we haven't performed as well as we should have and we as a team are trying to rectify that and obviously tomorrow is a big opportunity for us to do so.
"The preparation's been good. We had a good captain's run today and it's about mentally being switched on over the next 24 hours so that we go out at Test time tomorrow with a real positive, attacking mentality."
The Wallabies have been less than impressive on their month-long European tour, drawing 29-29 with Wales, edging past Italy 25-18 and then surrendering meekly to the Irish.
"By no means has the tour been smooth sailing but it's been an enjoyable one for the all the guys involved," Mortlock said.
"We've managed to trial a number of combinations and that was a primary focus of the tour. Obviously it's disappointing with some of the results but we're looking forward to finishing off on a really good note against Scotland.
"The last two mid-week performances by Australia have been great, and we'd like to follow their lead that they showed on Tuesday (in trouncing Scotland A 44-20) and have a really good performance to finish up the tour on.
"I've got no doubts that all the guys mentally are switched on to play well. It's a matter of us going out there and doing it."
Scotland hasn't beaten Australia since 1982 but is undefeated at home in 2006.
