Smith predicts greater role for rookies
South African captain Graeme Smith says rookie bowlers Garnett Kruger and Monde Zondeki will get further opportunities to impress during the upcoming tri-series.
Kruger, 29, and Zondeki, 23, played major roles in Tuesday's 94-run thumping of Queensland in the practice match at the Gabba.
They could prove to be the tourists' wildcard during the tournament after joining up with the rest of the squad following South Africa's 2-0 loss to Australia in the Test series.
Kruger took 3-18 from seven overs and Zondeki claimed 2-32 against the Bulls to press their claims for a more active role during the rest of the tour.
Smith suggested they may get their wish with injuries hampering the Proteas' bowling stocks.
"They're young boys but they've been around a while in domestic cricket," he said.
"They'll get an opportunity during the VB series and (Tuesday was) a good start for them."
Coach Mickey Arthur has given his players two days off to recover from any niggling injuries ahead of Friday's final practice match against a squad from the Queensland Academy of Sport.
Proteas selectors remain hopeful that injured quartet - Charl Langeveldt (groin), Ashwell Prince (thigh), Andre Nel (foot) and Justin Kemp (shoulder) - will be available for that match.
They begin their tri-series assault on Sunday against Australia at the Gabba.
The tournament starts on Friday when Australia plays Sri Lanka in Melbourne.
