Maroons rule out Webcke Origin SOS
Queensland chairman of selectors Des Morris said the Maroons had the depth to cover for the loss of frontrower Steve Price for the remainder of this year's State of Origin series without having to beg Shane Webcke to reconsider his representative rugby league retirement.
Price, who was man of the match in Queensland's golden-point victory in last Wednesday night's opening Origin clash, was ruled out for the rest of the series with a ruptured medial ligament in his knee.
Morris said the news was a big blow to the Queensland camp ahead of game two in Sydney on June 15.
"He's been pretty good for us over the last few years, it's bad luck for him," Morris said.
"It's always hard to replace a player of Steve's calibre but we've got quite a few options."
But one of them isn't Webcke, who retired from representative football in April after 21 games for the Maroons.
"No I don't think so," Morris said.
"He's made his decision and it's not as if we're struggling.
"We've got some quality players around, we appreciate what Shane's done for us over the years, but he's decided to move on."
Webcke said selectors needn't bother asking because there was no way he would reconsider his decision.
